back end engineer - legacy systems modernization / integration

As a Back End Engineer you’ll lead the way to modernization, playing a key-role in our growing SW Engineering team (currently we are 9). The main focus will be to drive the transformation of legacy internal applications, ensuring smooth migration into new technologies that meet the current and future needs of our business.

Your day-to-day:

• Collaborate with a cross-functional team, including Software Engineers, Business Analysts, and main tech and non-tech stakeholders, to enhance and modernize our legacy financial systems.
• Translate complex business requirements from the financial sector into detailed technical specifications and deliver robust, scalable solutions.
• Develop, test, and deploy COBOL/400 and RPG/400 applications on AS400 systems, ensuring seamless integration with IBM Web Services and SQL databases.
• Lead the design and implementation of database architecture, focusing on optimization, scalability, and future-proofing.
• Contribute to the migration of legacy systems to modern technology stacks, recommending and implementing new features and improvements based on best practices.
• Work within a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) environment and use ETL tools to ensure data flow efficiency and accuracy across systems.
• Document your technical findings, share insights with the team, and champion best practices for COBOL development across the organization.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (a relevant postgraduate degree is highly appreciated).
• Minimum 5 years of professional experience in software development, integration projects, or business analysis within the financial sector (insurance or banking).
• Proven expertise in COBOL/400, RPG/400, AS400, and IBM Web Services, with strong knowledge of SQL programming.
• Solid understanding of database architecture, design, and implementation.
• Familiarity with Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and ETL tools.
• Strong ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions for large-scale environments.
• Experience in handling large-scale projects in a fast-paced financial environment.
